  • What We Do

Community Work Ireland (CWI) is a national organisation that promotes and supports community work as a means of addressing poverty, social exclusion and inequality; promoting, protecting and advancing human rights and ultimately achieving social change that will contribute to the creation of a just, sustainable and equal society.

    What We Do

CWI works to create the conditions for community work to develop by advocating for policies, programmes and resources to enable the growth and sustainability of a strong autonomous community development sector in Ireland.

CWI work is structured around four key pillars of activity:

Influencing Policy

We do this by:

  • Advocating for, and contributing to, the development of programmes, policies and structures that facilitate independent, autonomous community work.
  • Playing a representative role on existing, new and emerging policy advocacy, implementation and co-ordination structures.
  • Contributing the perspective of our members in policy debates, consultation and review processes through submissions and advocacy efforts.

Resourcing Practice

We do this by:

  • Promoting the All-Ireland Standards for Community Work.
  • Creating and disseminating collective critical policy analysis with CWI members and other stakeholders.
  • Undertaking and engaging in research.
  • Providing training and capacity building opportunities.
  • Providing opportunities for information sharing, networking, dialogue and inputting into policy for CWI members and allies.
  • Playing a key supporting role in the All-Ireland Endorsement Body for Community Work Education and Training.
  • Contributing to community work education and training programmes.

Cross Sectoral Collaboration

We do this by:

  • Building collaboration and developing alliances on a range of initiatives and priorities.
  • Collaboratively organising conferences and seminars on current issues.

Growing our organisation

We do this by:

  • Building and expanding the CWI membership base and ensuring opportunities for engagement and collective action.
  • Ensuring good internal and external communications.
  • Ensuring that Community Work Ireland is sustainably funded, including the diversification of the funding base.
  • Ensuring that CWI adheres to governance responsibilities, meeting all legal obligations.
  • Holding regular meetings of the CWI Central Group (Board of Directors) and ensuring that all members are aware of their legal responsibilities.
  • Developing and implementing annual workplans that are based on the CWI strategic plan.

CWI Funders

CWI work is supported by the Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO), funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Rural and Community Development
